It was a difficult moment for the Israelites, when Joshua told them, “Ye are not to shout, nor make any noise with their voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall you shout.” – Joshua 6:10.
There are times when you have been waiting to SPEAK UP! When you have wanted to say something for so long, and now that you are near the entrance of the city…now that you are face to face with the enemy, it seems like, “Now is the time to STAND UP and let them know I am here“. But, Joshua told the children of Israel, “Don’t SHOUT!“. In fact, he told them not to make one bit of noise, but MOVE in silence. That means, they were not to grunt and complain about the experience, they can’t throw things at the wall to try and intimidate the enemy, and try to strike fear into his heart. They can’t even sing to try and get through the boring experience of just marching. Nope, it seemed as though they had to simply move and wait to hear the command from Joshua.
Sometimes silence feels like weakness. I know I’ve felt at times that I MUST SAY SOMETHING right this minute or I will BUST!!! I mean, they are getting away with murder aren’t they! Feeling like others have power over me. It can feel like you are not doing anything to help the fight, or futher the advancement of taking the city, and overcome the enemy. But remember, Joshua didn’t say NEVER SHOUT! He said to Wait until you hear my command to SHOUT! It is very important to listen and follow the instructions of the CAPTAIN! They know what is happening behind the scene to prepare the walls to fall around you, so that you won’t get hurt in the process. Speaking out-of-order, in anger, malus, bitterness, or at the wrong time, can cause the enemy to take the occasion to use your SHOUT against you. But, if you wait for the command to come from the LORD, He will set you up so that when it is time for you to SPEAK UP, your words will cause the walls to not only shake, BUT cause them to crumble beneath the enemy, and give you way into the land to posses it after all!
Proverbs 25:11, “Like apples of gold in settings of silver, is a word spoken in right circumstances.”
